What Bucketeer does

Bucketeer is a feature flag and experimentation platform created by CyberAgent, which runs it in production according to the README. It covers targeted rollouts by attribute or segment, progressive rollouts on an hourly, daily or weekly schedule, and two ways of linking flags: prerequisites, which stop a flag from being evaluated unless another flag returns a given variation, and rules that use another flag’s result as a targeting condition.

Its experimentation module is built in. You define goals, run A/B or multivariate tests, and Bucketeer analyzes the results with Bayesian statistics. Split audience rollouts let you run an experiment on just a slice of traffic, for example a 50/50 test on 5% of users.

Automation and governance

Auto operations change flags on a schedule or when an event rate crosses a threshold, for example turning off a flag when errors rise. Flag triggers expose webhook URLs that CI/CD pipelines or monitoring tools such as Datadog, New Relic or Dynatrace can call. Roles (viewer, editor, owner) are set per environment, every change is recorded in an audit log, and Slack alerts point out flags that have had no requests for a week. Code references show where each flag is used in your source.

The README states that all of this is in the Apache-2.0 code, with no paid edition, seat limits or usage limits.

How evaluation works

Client SDKs for JavaScript, React, React Native, Android, iOS and Flutter receive evaluated flags from the server. Server SDKs for Go and Node.js can evaluate locally or remotely. OpenFeature providers are available for JavaScript and TypeScript, Swift, Kotlin and Go. Evaluation and goal events go through a Pub/Sub event pipeline for experiment analysis.

Self-hosting Bucketeer

Bucketeer is a set of Go microservices (API, batch, subscriber and web) with a React dashboard, behind Envoy and Nginx. Two deployment paths are documented:

  • A lite Docker Compose setup with MySQL and Redis, for development, small teams and evaluation. The local setup needs host-file entries for its gateway domains.
  • Kubernetes with Helm for production. The standard production deployment is designed for Google Cloud and uses Google Pub/Sub and BigQuery for event processing; the lite variant runs on any Kubernetes cluster with only MySQL and Redis.

Hosted version

There is no hosted service. The website links to a live demo only.

Limitations

The production architecture is heavier than most tools here and leans on Google Cloud services. Server-side SDKs exist only for Go and Node.js, so other back-end languages depend on OpenFeature providers or the API. The community is smaller than those of the leading projects, and there is no commercial support offer.

Who it suits

Bucketeer suits teams that want experimentation with statistics and automated rollouts without paying for an enterprise tier, and that can operate a microservice deployment, ideally on Google Cloud. For warehouse-based experiment analysis, compare GrowthBook; for a lighter flag server, Unleash or FeatBit.
