Main features

  • Agents that create and consume events in a directed graph
  • Website scraping with alerts when pages change
  • Watches RSS feeds, IMAP mailboxes, webhooks and MQTT topics
  • Scheduled digest emails
  • Peak and gap detection in event streams
  • Posts to Slack, Telegram, Pushover and other services, plus SMS via Twilio
  • Agents for OpenAI-compatible APIs
  • File transfer with Dropbox, S3, FTP and local storage
  • Custom logic in JavaScript, Liquid templates or jq
  • Publishes its own RSS feeds and JSON endpoints

What Huginn does

Huginn runs agents on your server. Each agent does one job, such as fetching a web page, reading an RSS feed, checking a mailbox or receiving a webhook, and emits events. Other agents consume those events to filter them, transform them, combine them into a digest or send them somewhere: an email, a Slack or Telegram message, a Twilio text, a file on S3. Chaining agents builds a directed graph of automations. The README calls it a hackable version of IFTTT or Zapier on your own server.

Huginn’s strength is watching things. It handles typical “tell me when this changes” jobs well: price and deal tracking, weather alerts, page change detection, keyword monitoring and spotting unusual spikes in a stream of events. It can also publish what it collects as an RSS feed or JSON endpoint for other tools to use. Newer agents call OpenAI-compatible APIs to summarize, classify or translate text.

How automations are built

Agents are created through web forms, with options written as JSON and templated with Liquid. When the built-in options are not enough, a JavaScript agent or jq can handle the logic. This is more flexible than a typical no-code builder, but it is closer to configuration than to drag-and-drop. The UI shows a diagram of how agents connect and lets you browse every event they produce, which makes debugging easier. Complex or specialized agents can be added as Ruby gems.

Self-hosting Huginn

Huginn is a Ruby on Rails application with a web process and a background worker, backed by MySQL or PostgreSQL. For a quick trial, the official all-in-one image runs with a single docker run command and prints an admin password to the log. For production, the README recommends Docker Compose with the single-process images, and it ships example Compose files for both databases. The same files work on Compose-based platforms such as Coolify and Dokploy. Huginn can also run on container hosts such as Render, Fly.io, Railway and DigitalOcean App Platform. The README notes that none of them keeps a worker running on a free tier. Community packages exist for YunoHost and Unraid, and a manual install guide covers Ubuntu and Debian.

If several people share one instance, the configuration guide covers how to restrict outbound requests.

Hosted version

There is no official hosted service. Hosting companies that sponsor the project are listed in the repository, but they are third parties.

Limitations

Huginn is maintained by one person in their spare time, with contributions from the community, so features arrive at a volunteer pace. It has far fewer ready-made SaaS integrations than Zapier. Connecting a CRM or accounting tool usually means calling its API with a generic web request agent. Setting agents up takes some technical comfort with JSON and templates, and there is no visual editor for building flows.

Who it suits

Huginn suits technical users who want personal or small-team automations that watch websites, feeds, inboxes and APIs, and who want them on their own server under a permissive MIT license with no paid edition. For business workflows across many SaaS apps, a builder such as Activepieces will be quicker to set up. See the workflow automation guide for the options side by side.
