What La Suite Meet does

La Suite Meet is a video meeting app that runs in the browser, developed by DINUM, the French government’s interministerial digital directorate, as part of La Suite numérique, its set of open source collaboration tools. It is the software behind Visio, the meeting service DINUM runs for French public servants. The interface is deliberately plain: open a link, check camera and microphone, join.

Technically it is a Django REST backend and a React front end on top of the LiveKit selective forwarding unit (SFU). LiveKit does the media work: simulcast, speaker detection and SVC codecs such as VP9 and AV1, which is what lets the project aim at meetings of more than 100 people. Several participants can share their screens at once, and the chat is not stored after the meeting.

Recording, transcription and phone dial-in are in the open source code but marked beta. Recordings are made with LiveKit Egress, stored in S3-compatible storage, sent to the user as a download link and deleted after a configurable number of days. Transcription uses a WhisperX-based service and delivers the text to La Suite Docs. Dial-in uses LiveKit SIP with a SIP trunk from a telephony provider. Calendar integration, live subtitles and meeting summaries are listed as work in progress.

Security and access

Every instance needs an OpenID Connect identity provider; the repository includes a Keycloak example, and DINUM’s own service uses ProConnect, the French state’s login system. Room access can be restricted per room. Media is encrypted in transit with WebRTC and handled by your LiveKit server; end-to-end encryption is listed in the README as coming soon, so it is not available today. The README also says that all features developed will stay open source.

Self-hosting La Suite Meet

The maintainers run La Suite Meet on Kubernetes and give advanced support only for that method. A Docker Compose guide, a Scalingo buildpack and community packages (Nix, and YunoHost under construction) also exist. Even a minimal instance needs PostgreSQL, Redis, a LiveKit server, an OIDC provider and SMTP for invitations. Recording and transcription add LiveKit Egress, S3-compatible storage and the WhisperX service. LiveKit needs TCP 7881 and UDP 7882 (or a UDP range) open in addition to HTTPS. The README admits that recording and transcription still lack detailed documentation.

Hosted version

The developers do not sell a hosted service. DINUM’s instance and the one run by ANCT are reserved for French public agents. visio.lasuite.coop is an open demo that is reset every month, and some third-party providers offer hosted services based on La Suite Meet.

Limitations

The required identity provider and LiveKit server make the first install heavier than tools that work out of the box. Recording, transcription and telephony are still beta, end-to-end encryption is not yet there, and the documentation is incomplete outside Kubernetes. No native mobile apps are described; people join from mobile browsers.

Who it suits

La Suite Meet fits public bodies and organizations that already run an OIDC identity provider and Kubernetes and want a permissively licensed, LiveKit-based meeting service with public-sector backing. Smaller teams looking for a quick install should compare Jitsi Meet, and those who want embedding features on LiveKit can look at plugNmeet or OpenVidu.
