What Measure does
Measure is a monitoring platform built only for mobile apps. Its SDKs cover Android, iOS and iPadOS, Flutter, React Native and Kotlin Multiplatform, and the project presents it as an open source alternative to Firebase Crashlytics. It records fatal crashes, Android ANRs (app not responding), iOS app hangs, unhandled errors and errors you report yourself, and groups similar ones into issues.
What sets it apart from server-side error trackers is the context it keeps for each crash. A session replay shows the steps a user took before the failure, and user journeys show how people move between screens. Performance traces and spans, launch times and network monitoring sit alongside the errors, and users can file bug reports by shaking the device. Collection settings such as sampling can be changed from the dashboard, so you can capture more detail without waiting for an app store release.
Crash reports and symbolication
Readable stack traces need the build’s symbol files. Measure accepts R8 mapping files for Android, dSYMs for iOS, Flutter symbol files and React Native source maps, and the self-hosted stack includes Sentry’s open source Symbolicator service to process native frames.
Alerts go by email or Slack when crashes or ANRs spike for an issue (by default 100 an hour and 0.5% of sessions, adjustable per app), when a new bug report arrives, and as a daily summary. An MCP server lets AI assistants query the data, and an optional agent helps debug issues.
Self-hosting Measure
The self-hosted version is installed with a script that sets up Docker Compose (or Podman) on a single Linux machine. The documented minimum is an x86-64 VM running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Debian 12 with 4 vCPUs, 16 GB of RAM and 100 GB of disk. You also need DNS records for separate dashboard, API and ingest hostnames, Google and GitHub OAuth apps for sign-in, an SMTP provider, and a reverse proxy such as Caddy that you configure yourself.
The stack is larger than the app suggests: a Go backend and Next.js dashboard with PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, Valkey, MinIO object storage, Apache Iggy for message streaming and Symbolicator. Upgrades check out a release tag and rerun the installer, and some versions need migration scripts. The documentation warns that running it at scale takes experience with security, networking and databases, recommends the cloud for distributed setups, and suggests self-hosting mainly for regulated environments.
Hosted version
Measure Cloud is run by the project. It has a free tier with a monthly data allowance and a paid plan billed by data volume, with longer retention and no limit on seats.
Limitations
Measure covers mobile apps only: there are no SDKs for web front ends or server languages, so a team with a web app and an API still needs another tool for those. Self-hosting needs a sizeable VM and many services and is designed for one machine. Sign-in on your own instance requires Google and GitHub OAuth apps, and alerts only go to email and Slack.
Who it suits
Measure fits mobile teams that want Crashlytics-style crash reporting with replay and performance data, under Apache-2.0, either hosted or on a server they control. Teams that need one tool for web, backend and mobile errors should look at the Sentry-compatible Rustrak or the error tracking guide.
License details
Apache-2.0. The optional AI debugging agent uses an external LLM provider with your own API key when self-hosted.
