What Wiki.js does

Wiki.js is a self-hosted wiki for team documentation, internal knowledge bases and public docs sites. Editors can write in Markdown with a live preview or in a visual editor, and pages can include diagrams such as UML, flowcharts and sequence diagrams. Content can be written in several languages, with right-to-left support, and the interface itself is translated into more than 40 languages. Every page keeps a history.

What sets Wiki.js apart is the range of modules for sign-in, storage and search, all included without a paid tier.

Integrations

  • Sign-in: local accounts, LDAP, SAML, CAS, OAuth2, OpenID Connect, Azure AD, Okta and other providers, with two-factor authentication. Access is controlled by groups and page rules that match paths or regular expressions.
  • Git sync: pages can be synchronized with a Git repository on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps or another host, so documentation also exists as files under version control.
  • Backups: content can be copied to S3, Azure Blob storage, Google Cloud Storage, a local folder or SFTP.
  • Search: a basic built-in engine, or PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Algolia and other search services.

Versions

A 3.0 rewrite of Wiki.js has been announced for a long time. The main repository now holds the 3.0 code, and its README says it is a beta that should not be used in production. The stable version is 2.x, maintained in a separate repository (requarks/wiki-v2), which still receives updates. Because the main repository’s GitHub releases are 3.0 betas, the release field is hidden on this page.

Self-hosting Wiki.js

Wiki.js runs on Node.js and can be installed with Docker, directly on Linux, macOS or Windows, on Kubernetes with Helm, or from one-click images on cloud marketplaces. Current 2.x releases need Node.js 22 or 24, at least 1 GB of RAM on Linux, one CPU core (two or more recommended) and at least 1 GB of storage. The docs say the process itself typically uses around 70 MB of RAM.

PostgreSQL is strongly recommended. Version 2.x also works with MySQL, MariaDB, Microsoft SQL Server and SQLite (not for production), but 3.x will support only PostgreSQL, so new installs should start there to avoid a migration later.

Hosted version

The developers do not offer a hosted service. The website points to self-hosting and to pre-configured images on providers such as DigitalOcean.

Limitations

The long wait for 3.0 is the main concern: 2.x is in maintenance, and the new version is not ready for production. There is no real-time co-editing, and Wiki.js does not offer databases, task lists or Notion-style blocks; it is a documentation wiki. With no hosted version, you run the server yourself.

Who it suits

Wiki.js suits technical teams that want a free wiki with enterprise sign-in options, Git-backed pages and a choice of search and storage back ends, and that are comfortable running Node.js and PostgreSQL. Teams that want real-time editing should compare Docmost, and those that prefer the simplest possible structure for non-technical staff, BookStack.

License details

AGPL-3.0. The main repository holds the 3.0 beta; the stable 2.x line is maintained in requarks/wiki-v2, also AGPL-3.0. No paid edition.
