What Amplitude does

Amplitude turns tracked user events into charts, cohorts and dashboards without SQL. It offers 17 chart types, including event segmentation, funnels, retention, journeys and an engagement matrix, plus behavioral cohorts and account-level reporting for B2B products. Around that core it bundles session replay, heatmaps, feature and web experimentation, feature flags, and in-product guides and surveys.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Hosted only. Data is stored by Amplitude in its US or EU data center, and the region is set when the organization is created.
  • Cookies by default. The Browser SDK may set cookies as soon as it starts, with identity stored in a cookie that lasts 365 days by default, so Amplitude advises delaying it until consent where consent is required.
  • Broad autocapture. Autocapture is on by default in Browser SDK 2 and collects more interaction data than many sites need unless it is configured down.
  • Plan limits. The Free plan includes 2 million events a month, custom data retention needs a paid plan, and session replays are kept for one month by default.

What to compare in an alternative

  1. Chart types. Check the reports you rely on, such as funnels, retention, paths and cohort comparison, and whether analysis needs SQL.
  2. Built-in tools. Experiments, feature flags, session replay, heatmaps and surveys in the same product or as separate tools.
  3. Hosting and consent. Self-hosting, hosting region, cookie use and how easily tracking can wait for consent.
  4. Retention. Default retention of events and replays, and whether you control it.
  5. Portability. Raw export, warehouse integration and APIs.

Which one to choose

PostHog is the closest match to Amplitude’s breadth, with product analytics, replay, heatmaps, experiments, feature flags and surveys, usually on its hosted service. OpenPanel offers funnels, cohorts, user profiles, replay and A/B tests with a lighter learning curve and a self-hosting option.
