What Odoo does

Odoo is a suite of business applications rather than a standalone CRM. Its CRM app manages leads and opportunities in a kanban pipeline, with stages, expected revenue, scheduled activities and lost reasons, and it organizes salespeople into sales teams that can receive leads automatically. An optional lead stage lets teams qualify enquiries before they become opportunities, and duplicates can be merged. Reports cover wins and losses, expected revenue and forecasts.

The CRM’s value grows with the other apps, all of which share one PostgreSQL database. With the Sales app installed, a quotation can be created straight from an opportunity; the Website app’s contact form creates leads; the Email Marketing app sends campaigns to contacts; and invoicing, inventory and projects follow from the same customer record. Organizations that want to replace a CRM and several neighboring tools at once often look at Odoo for this reason.

Community and Enterprise editions

The repository listed here is Odoo Community, under LGPL-3.0. Odoo Enterprise is not a separate product but a collection of extra add-ons, kept in a private repository and unlocked with a subscription code, that run on top of the Community server. Several CRM-adjacent apps, such as marketing automation, VoIP and helpdesk, are not in the Community code base. Within the CRM itself, the Community module includes predictive lead scoring, which estimates the chance of winning each lead from historical results. Lead mining and lead enrichment are present but run as paid In-App Purchase services that consume credits.

Self-hosting Odoo

Odoo publishes packaged installers for Debian-based and RPM-based Linux distributions and for Windows, an official Docker image, and instructions for running from source. Odoo 20 needs Python 3.12 or later and PostgreSQL 16 or later. PDF reports such as quotations depend on wkhtmltopdf 0.12.6, which must be installed by hand, and right-to-left languages need the rtlcss tool from npm.

An on-premise database can stay on one version indefinitely, but each major version is supported for three years, and upgrading a database with custom modules between major versions is a project of its own.

Hosted version

Odoo S.A. sells two hosted options. Odoo Online provides managed databases with rolling upgrades but does not accept custom modules or modules from the Odoo Apps Store. Odoo.sh is a platform for running customized Odoo with Git-based builds and SSH access. The documentation names a “One App Free” plan alongside Standard and Custom plans, and notes that external API access is only available on the Custom plan.

Limitations

The open source edition is a subset of what Odoo sells, so check whether the features you need are in Community before you plan around them. Odoo’s breadth also brings configuration work: the CRM is simple to start with, but a full deployment touching sales, accounting and inventory needs careful setup. Contact enrichment and lead generation are paid services even on a self-hosted server.

Who it suits

Odoo suits small and mid-sized companies that want the CRM linked to quoting, invoicing and other operations, and that have someone, in house or at a partner, to configure and upgrade it. If you only need a pipeline and contact management, a dedicated tool from the CRM guide will be lighter to run.
