Open source alternatives to Intercom

Intercom combines a website and in-app chat Messenger, a shared inbox, a help center and the Fin AI agent. These open source tools cover the chat and inbox side, and all of them can run on your own server.

What Intercom does

Intercom is a hosted customer service platform. Its Messenger puts a chat window on websites and in mobile apps, and conversations from it, email, phone, SMS and WhatsApp land in a shared Inbox with tickets, team inboxes, SLAs and workflows. A public or private Help Center holds articles. Outbound tools send banners, tooltips, product tours and email campaigns. On top of that sit Fin, an AI agent that answers customers across channels, and Copilot, an AI assistant for agents. The plans are Essential, Advanced and Expert.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Costs that grow with volume. Intercom charges per seat and also bills usage: each Fin outcome, SMS, WhatsApp conversations, phone and email campaigns. Copilot is a paid add-on beyond a small monthly allowance per agent. Your bill therefore depends on conversation volume as well as team size. The pricing page shows a 14-day trial but no free plan.
  • Where conversations are stored. Workspaces are hosted on AWS in the United States by default. Hosting in the EU (Dublin) or Australia (Sydney) is offered only to new workspaces on the Advanced and Expert plans under a contract. Some billing and support data for EU workspaces may still leave the region.
  • Moving is hard. An existing workspace cannot be moved to another region. Contacts and data attributes can be carried over by CSV or API, but conversation history cannot be imported into the new workspace, only exported for your records. Leaving Intercom for another tool has the same problem.

What to compare in an alternative

  1. The chat widget. Proactive messages, pre-chat forms, business hours and mobile SDKs if you use Intercom inside an app.
  2. Inbox and help center together. Whether the tool combines conversations with a knowledge base, or you need a second product.
  3. Channels. Email, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram and SMS: check which are in the open source code and which need extensions or a paid license.
  4. AI and bots. Whether automated answers can run on a model provider you choose, including a self-hosted one.
  5. Hosting and data. Self-hosting, export options and how much server work you are taking on.

Which one to choose

Chatwoot is the closest match. It describes itself as an open source Intercom alternative and offers a website widget, many messaging channels, a help center, mobile apps for agents and an optional cloud service. Some features, including its Captain AI, SLA policies and SSO, need a paid license even when self-hosted. Libredesk is a simpler choice with email, live chat and WhatsApp in a single Go binary, every feature in the AGPL code and AI features that work with any OpenAI-compatible provider. Live Helper Chat suits teams that mostly need website chat: it has visitor tracking, proactive invitations, a bot builder and operator apps, runs on PHP and MySQL, and has a hosted version with the same features. None of them replicates Intercom’s product tours and outbound campaign tools. For email-heavy support, see the help desk guide.
