What Mixpanel does
Mixpanel measures what users do in a product. Its core reports are Insights for trends and breakdowns, Funnels for conversion through multi-step flows, Flows for user paths and Retention for how many users come back. Cohorts group users by behavior or properties and can be reused across reports. Mixpanel has also added session replay with heatmaps on the web, experiments and feature flags, and connectors that sync data from data warehouses.
Why people look for an alternative
- Data location. Data is stored by Mixpanel, on US servers on Google Cloud by default. EU or India residency has to be chosen when a project is created, and Mixpanel says it cannot move an existing project to another region.
- Retention limits. Events are deleted automatically after 2 years for projects created from 1 September 2025 (5 years for older projects unless their plan changes), and session replays are kept for 30 days by default.
- Cookies. The JavaScript SDK stores identifiers in a cookie by default, so EU sites usually need consent handling.
- Plan limits. Features and volumes depend on the plan, for example feature flag and cohort targeting limits and longer replay retention as an Enterprise add-on.
What to compare in an alternative
- Depth of event analysis. Funnels with conversion windows, user paths, retention cohorts and breakdowns by event and user properties.
- Identity. How anonymous and logged-in users are merged, and whether group or account-level analytics is available for B2B products.
- Extra tools. Whether session replay, heatmaps, experiments and feature flags are included or need separate products.
- Hosting and retention. Self-hosting, where the hosted version stores data, and how long raw events and replays are kept.
- Data in and out. SDKs for your platforms, autocapture, raw export and SQL access.
Which one to choose
PostHog is the most complete replacement, adding session replay, feature flags, experiments and surveys, though most teams use its hosted service because self-hosting is meant for small volumes. OpenPanel describes itself mainly as a Mixpanel alternative and combines funnels, cohorts and user profiles with traffic reports and A/B tests. Rybbit covers funnels, retention, user journeys and identified users within a simpler, cookieless web analytics tool.
