What monday.com does

monday.com is built around boards whose rows (items) and typed columns can represent almost anything: projects, tasks, clients or requests. Teams start from templates, write docs next to their boards and follow updates in real time. Paid plans add timeline, Gantt and calendar views, automations and integrations, guest access for people outside the account, and on the Enterprise tier portfolio management with health overviews across projects. The plans are Free, Basic, Standard, Pro and Enterprise, billed per seat, and AI features such as agents and a meeting notetaker draw on monthly credits.

Why people look for an alternative

  • A free plan for two. The Free plan allows up to 2 seats and 3 boards, so teams need a paid plan.
  • Core planning on higher tiers. Timeline, Gantt and calendar views, automations and guest access start on Standard, and portfolio management is limited to Enterprise.
  • Metered usage. Automations and integrations are counted in actions per month, and AI features in credits, so costs depend on usage as well as seats.
  • Hosted only. There is no self-hosted edition, so your project data always lives on the vendor’s service.

What to compare in an alternative

  1. Flexible structure. Custom fields, templates and different views of the same work.
  2. People and time. Resource planning, capacity views, time tracking and budgets, which are often why teams choose monday.com.
  3. Timeline views. Gantt or timeline charts across one or several projects.
  4. Automation. Rules without monthly action limits when self-hosted.
  5. Getting data out. How you will move existing boards, usually through a spreadsheet export and a CSV import.

Which one to choose

Worklenz is the nearest open source match to how teams use monday.com: list, board and Gantt views, resource planning, a cross-project planner with utilization, time logs, budgets and a client portal, all included in the self-hosted AGPL edition. It imports tasks from CSV rather than directly from monday.com. If you need classic project planning with Gantt charts and cost reports rather than flexible boards, look at OpenProject and Leantime in the project management guide.
