Open source alternatives to Pingdom

Pingdom is a hosted website monitoring service from SolarWinds. These open source tools cover its core job of checking that sites and services are up and publishing a status page, and most of them run on your own server.

What Pingdom does

SolarWinds Pingdom monitors websites from the outside. Its Synthetic Monitoring product runs uptime checks from more than 100 locations, analyzes page speed, tests multi-step transactions such as logins and checkouts, sends email and SMS alerts, and publishes public status pages and reports, with maintenance windows to pause alerts. A separate Real User Monitoring product measures page performance for actual visitors by browser, device and location. Infrastructure, APM and log monitoring are sold through other SolarWinds products.

Why people look for an alternative

  • No free plan. The pricing page offers a 30-day trial and paid subscriptions only.
  • Tiers sized by checks. Synthetic plans are sized by the number of uptime checks, advanced transaction checks and SMS credits, so adding monitors moves you to a higher tier. Real User Monitoring is a separate subscription sized by pageviews.
  • Hosted only. There is no self-hosted edition. To monitor services behind a firewall you have to allow Pingdom’s published probe IP addresses.
  • More than some sites need. For many sites, HTTP and port checks, alerts to chat tools and a status page are enough.

What to compare in an alternative

  1. Check locations. Pingdom tests from many regions. A self-hosted monitor checks from wherever you install it, so run it on separate infrastructure from the services it watches, or choose a tool with multi-region or deployable probes.
  2. Check types. HTTP with keyword or JSON conditions, TCP, ping, DNS, certificate expiry, databases, and whether multi-step transaction checks such as a login flow are supported.
  3. Alert channels. Email, SMS, chat tools, PagerDuty or webhooks.
  4. Status pages. Custom domains, incident updates and maintenance notices.
  5. Configuration style. A web interface, or YAML and Terraform kept in version control.

Which one to choose

Uptime Kuma is the easiest place to start: one container with SQLite, a web interface, many check types, more than 90 notification services and status pages. Checkmate covers similar ground and adds scheduled Lighthouse page speed audits and server metrics through its agent, which is the nearest open source match to Pingdom’s page speed reports. Gatus defines checks and alert rules in YAML, with detailed conditions on status codes, response bodies, response times and certificates. openstatus is built around status pages and incidents and can be managed with YAML or Terraform; its hosted service checks from many public regions, while self-hosted installs check only from private probes you deploy. Upptime runs on GitHub Actions and GitHub Pages with no server at all, though checks run every five minutes by default. OneUptime adds incidents, on-call scheduling and observability on top of uptime checks and status pages, if you want one larger platform.

For cron jobs and scheduled tasks rather than websites, look at Healthchecks. The monitoring guide explains how these tools differ.
