Open source alternatives to Vercel

Vercel deploys frontend and full-stack apps from Git with a preview URL for every pull request. These open source platforms bring Git deploys and pull-request previews to servers you control.

What Vercel does

Vercel is a hosted platform for web applications, closely tied to Next.js, which its site presents as “Next.js by Vercel”, and supporting many other frameworks such as SvelteKit and Nitro. You connect a Git repository, and Vercel detects the framework, builds the project, serves static files from its CDN and runs server code as Vercel Functions. Every pull request gets its own preview deployment with a URL, and production deploys come from the main branch. Projects have local, preview and production environments with separate variables, and the platform adds image optimization, analytics, a firewall and DDoS mitigation.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Commercial use on the free plan. Vercel’s Hobby plan is free but limited to non-commercial, personal use under its fair use guidelines, so a business project has to move to a paid plan.
  • Hard stops on Hobby. When a Hobby project exceeds a usage limit, the feature generally cannot be used again until 30 days have passed.
  • Usage-based billing. The Pro plan includes a monthly credit that is spent across data transfer, function CPU and memory, requests and other resources, after which usage is billed on demand. Costs depend on traffic, which some teams find hard to predict.
  • Data location. Vercel Functions run in Washington, D.C. (iad1) by default for new projects. EU teams need to change the region explicitly, and static content is served from Vercel’s global CDN.
  • Portability. Teams worry about depending on one platform’s features. The Next.js documentation itself states that running Next.js as a Node.js server or in a Docker container supports all of its features, which makes moving to your own servers practical.

What to compare in an alternative

  1. Preview deployments. Whether each pull request gets its own environment and URL, and which Git hosts are supported.
  2. Framework support. A Node.js server or Docker image for Next.js and similar frameworks, plus static builds for sites that do not need a server.
  3. Build methods. Automatic detection with Nixpacks or Railpack versus writing a Dockerfile.
  4. What you give up. Self-hosted platforms run on your own servers: there is no global edge network or serverless functions layer, so add a CDN if your audience is worldwide.
  5. Environments and secrets. Separate variables for preview and production.

Which one to choose

Coolify is the broadest replacement: it builds with Nixpacks, Railpack, a Dockerfile or as a static site, creates preview deployments for pull requests, and has no paid-only features in its self-hosted version. Dokploy offers a similar workflow on Docker Swarm, with previews limited to its GitHub integration and some team features in a paid edition. ZaneOps supports preview environments for both GitHub and GitLab and shows HTTP request logs per service, but limits unlicensed instances to three users. All three run Next.js through a Node.js build or a Dockerfile on your own servers. Compare them in the deployment platforms guide.
