Rustrak
Lightweight self-hosted error tracker that accepts events from the official Sentry SDKs
What BugSnag does
BugSnag collects errors and crashes from applications, groups events into errors, and lets teams search and segment them, assign them by rules and track them per release. A central idea is stability: it measures how stable each release is and lets teams set stability targets to compare against. Performance monitoring of app starts, screen and page loads and network requests, plus distributed tracing, are part of the same product, and build tooling uploads source maps and symbol files so stack traces are readable. SDKs cover web, mobile and backend platforms.
BugSnag is owned by SmartBear. In early 2025 SmartBear presented it under the Insight Hub name; the current documentation uses BugSnag again and says new enterprise organizations are hosted on a smartbear.com domain while others stay on bugsnag.com.
Why people look for an alternative
- Daily event quotas. Plans include a daily event quota tracked as a balance that refills through the day. When rate limiting is on and the balance runs out, BugSnagās documentation says further events are not saved. Before June 2023 this behavior was called sampling.
- Free plan limits. The free plan is for a single user with a monthly allowance of events and spans.
- On-premises only on Enterprise. Running BugSnag on your own infrastructure, for example to keep error data that often contains personal data in-house, is offered only on the Enterprise plan.
What to compare in an alternative
- Platform coverage. Check that every platform you ship (browser, backend languages, Android, iOS, React Native, Flutter) has a supported client.
- Mobile specifics. ANRs and app hangs, symbol and mapping uploads, and crash-free session or release health figures.
- Grouping and triage. How errors are grouped, whether you can adjust it, and how issues are assigned and resolved.
- Quotas and retention. On your own server, the limits are your hardware and retention settings rather than a daily quota.
- Operating cost. The databases and services a self-hosted install needs, or whether a hosted version exists.
Which one to choose
Rustrak is the broadest replacement among the open source tools: it accepts events from the official Sentry SDKs, which cover browser, backend and mobile platforms, and it reports release health as crash-free sessions and users, alongside performance traces and logs. Moving from BugSnag means switching your apps to Sentry SDKs. Rustrak is young and self-hosted only.
For teams whose only concern is mobile apps, Measure is the closest in spirit: crash, ANR and app hang reporting with symbolication, crash-free metrics, performance traces and session replay for Android, iOS, Flutter and React Native, self-hosted or hosted. It does not cover web or backend errors. .NET and JavaScript teams can also consider Exceptionless. See the error tracking guide for the full comparison.
