Open source alternatives to Rollbar

Rollbar is a hosted error monitoring service that groups errors, tracks deploys and alerts teams. These open source tools do the same core job and can run on your own servers.

3 alternatives, sorted by GitHub stars as of 21 October 2026. Reviewed .

  1. Errbit

Self-hosted error catcher that accepts reports from existing Airbrake notifiers

  2. Exceptionless

Error, log and feature-usage reporting for .NET and JavaScript apps, hosted or on your own servers

  3. Rustrak

Lightweight self-hosted error tracker that accepts events from the official Sentry SDKs

What Rollbar does

Rollbar receives errors from applications through its SDKs, groups them into items, and lets teams refine grouping with custom fingerprinting rules. It records deploys so errors can be tied to a release, collects telemetry (the events leading up to an error), and can attach session replays. RQL, Rollbar’s query language, allows ad hoc analysis of error data, and integrations send items to tools such as Jira, Slack, PagerDuty and Datadog. Rollbar Resolve adds AI assistance for finding root causes and proposing fixes.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Occurrence limits. Plans are sized by monthly occurrences. According to Rollbar’s pricing page, processing stops at the plan’s limit by default; you can turn on on-demand coverage or an overage budget, which can raise costs during a spike.
  • Retention by plan. Error data is kept for 30 days on the free plan, 90 days on Essentials and 180 days on Advanced, with custom terms on Enterprise. Longer history means a higher plan.
  • Data location. Rollbar’s GDPR documentation lists its location as the USA, and we did not find an EU data region in its documentation. Organizations that want error data, which often includes personal data, on their own infrastructure need another option.
  • Lock-in. Leaving means replacing Rollbar’s SDKs in every application and rebuilding custom fingerprinting rules and RQL queries elsewhere.

What to compare in an alternative

  1. Client libraries. Whether the tool has SDKs for your languages, or accepts a protocol you can reuse, such as Sentry’s or Airbrake’s.
  2. Grouping control. Rollbar users rely on custom fingerprinting; check how each tool groups errors and whether you can configure it.
  3. Deploy and release tracking. Whether errors are linked to versions and regressions are flagged.
  4. Notifications. Email, Slack, webhooks and issue tracker integration.
  5. Retention. Whether you can keep errors as long as you need, and clean up automatically.

Which one to choose

Rustrak is the most complete self-hosted replacement: it works with the official Sentry SDKs in any language, groups errors by deterministic fingerprints, tracks releases and alerts on new issues and regressions to Slack, email or webhooks. Moving from Rollbar means switching your apps to Sentry SDKs.

Exceptionless suits .NET and JavaScript applications and also collects logs and feature usage, with both a hosted service and a self-hosted option. Errbit is a long-running MIT-licensed server for teams using Airbrake notifiers, with configurable grouping and many notification channels, but it needs MongoDB and Rails experience to run.

Rails and Elixir teams that do not need a separate server can track errors inside the application with Solid Errors or ErrorTracker. The error tracking guide explains the trade-offs.
