What Typeform does
Typeform is a hosted builder for forms, surveys, quizzes, tests and polls, known for its layout that shows one question at a time. It is used for lead generation, registrations, applications and customer or employee feedback. Plans add conditional logic, webhooks and integrations, video questions and answers, AI-assisted form creation, analytics such as drop-off rates and conversion tracking, and tools for contacts and automation. Typeform has also added products for go-to-market workflows (Growth Flow), AI-moderated research studies (Research Flow) and a connection for AI assistants over MCP.
Why people look for an alternative
- Response allowances. Every paid plan includes a set number of responses per month. More responses mean a higher plan, or custom limits on Enterprise.
- Features spread across tiers. Removing Typeform branding and using a custom subdomain start on the middle plan, drop-off rates and conversion tracking on a higher one, and SSO and HIPAA compliance are Enterprise features.
- Choice of hosting region. The pricing page lists the choice between a US and an EU data center as Enterprise-only, so other customers cannot pick where their responses are stored.
- No self-hosting. Forms and answers exist only on Typeform’s service, so there is no on-premises option for organizations that must keep data in-house.
What to compare in an alternative
- Form style. One question at a time, a classic page, or both. HeyForm offers the conversational layout plus classic and popup modes; most other tools use page-based forms.
- Logic and fields. Conditional logic, hidden fields, variables and calculations, and specialist fields such as payments, signatures and file uploads.
- Integrations in the open source edition. Some hosted plans list connectors that are not in the self-hosted code. Check which ones you would get, and whether webhooks and an API cover the rest.
- Branding and embedding. Custom domains, removal of the vendor’s badge, custom CSS and embed options. In open-core tools some of these need a paid license.
- Volume and data location. Self-hosted editions do not cap responses, and some hosted plans let you choose an EU region.
Which one to choose
For Typeform-style lead forms, quizzes and feedback surveys, HeyForm is the closest match. It has a one-question-at-a-time mode and payment, signature and legal terms fields, and its whole repository is AGPL-3.0, but self-hosters get webhooks rather than ready-made connectors. OpnForm suits everyday business forms with logic, computed variables, Stripe payments and many notification and automation integrations. It has a free cloud plan, but free self-hosted instances are limited to two users. If your Typeform use is mostly NPS, satisfaction and product research, Formbricks adds targeted website and in-app surveys and EU hosting, with teams, SSO and branding removal in its paid enterprise code.
